Join Us for our "Paddles on the Water" program
Paddles on the Water is a cooperative partnership with Preston Conservation Commission, Preston Parks and Recreation Department and the Amos Lake Association. Paddles on the Waters has been a long-time goal of the Preston Conservation and Agricultural Commission. Preston Parks and Recreation had the ability to get the word out and the ability to register participants. Amos Lake Association had the volunteers and knowledge of Amos Lake to carry out the events. CT DEEP became and unexpected partner by suppling vessel identification stickers and permission to copy some of their printed materials.
Each paddle event begins at the state boat launch with a safety review at which time we handed out whistles equipped with a thermometer, and compass. CT DEEP provided permission to copy and handout their paddlecraft float plan and vessel identification stickers. Next, we review CT DEEP’s CLEAN-DRAIN-DRY program to stop the spread of invasive species. Along with our own handout containing a bathymetric map of Amos Lake and identifying photos of Eurasian and variable leaf water milfoil. Two aquatic invasives found in Amos Lake.
Every paddler is required to wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) during the event. We will have a safety boat floating in the water within eye and ear shot of the paddlers. There will be a lead guide at each event. We have a basic emergency response plan in place that specifies take-out points, individual roles for our volunteers, and procedures. Our local fire departments are prepared and ready in case of an emergency.
Each participant must sign a waiver of liability prior to the event.
