PRESTON COMMUNITY FUND
The Preston Community Fund was originally established in 1991 with funds given by the former American Ref-Fuel Company of Southeastern Connecticut, which then operated the Preston regional trash incinerator, to help support the varied nonprofit and civic organizations in town, under the guidance of an advisory committee of Preston residents.
In 2015, the advisory committee voted to transfer the fund to the Community Foundation and retain its role as advisors to this permanently endowed fund, in making annual grants to benefit Preston residents.
The fund has supported projects and organizations such as the Preston Pipeline town newsletter, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Amos Lake Association, Preston Veterans Memorial elementary school, Preston Historical Society, Preston Animal Control, Preston Parks and Recreation Department, and the community food bank.
The Preston Community Fund shall be used for the exclusive purpose of supporting the arts, cultural and social needs of the residents and organizations of the Town of Preston, Connecticut. The Fund supports the development of innovative and imaginative programs, projects and services in cooperation with 501(C)(3) nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies and programs for the exclusive benefit of Preston residents, organizations, programs, projects or services.
Preston Community Fund Grants Awarded to Amos Lake Association
2023 - We did not apply for any funding. We had a successfule fundraising year. We willl be working with the town on their Sustainable CT goals and hope to utilize the Preston Community Fund Grants for these projects.
2022 - $750 - Aquatic survey project. The aquatic survey is a tool designed to assess the status of and changes in quality of the lake, streams, and wetlands. The survey will tell us if specific results were achieved, what is different as a result of our various projects. A comparison to the prior year will tell is if the species increased or decreased. Were the increases/decreases to native or nonnative species?
2021 - $650 - The program includes public paddles hosted by Amos Lake Assoc and the Town of Preston Conservation and Agricultural Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department . The purpose of this program is both recreation and educational. Over the past two years more residents are seeking the calming effects of the lake environment for their physical and mental health. We assist them with awareness of the wildlife, habitats and best boating practices.
2020 - $800 - The Preston Community Fund provided funding for four 10 x 20 bottom blankets. Expanded our successful chemical free control of the variable leaf milfoil program
2019 - $450 - The Preston Community Fund provided funding for three 10 x 20 bottom blankets. The project was a successful, affordable solution for the control of the variable leaf milfoil shown to have detrimental effects on water quality and the recreational use of Amos Lake.
These chemical free, sunlight barriers can be used for several years and can also be moved to a new location after three months. Although our expectation of the second application was low due to the fact that this area had already seen several months of the growing season. We were very pleased with the results.
2018 - $450 - The Water Quality Maintenance record was modified to fit into the welcome packet. Updated and modified the welcome packet to an electronic version. http://online.fliphtml5.com/udcrw/poex/ to view. Held our free-soil testing day, and sent two water quality monitoring samples to the lab.
2017 - $800 - The Preston Community Fund provided funding to provide residents with information about the importance of groundwater, protecting and maintaining well water, and recording septic maintenance. Our goal was to mail copies to every household in the watershed and make available additional copies to all residents. We were able to enclose this record keeping folder into the Pipeline and have it delivered to every household in Preston.
2016 - $500 - The Preston Community Fund provided funding to enable us provide welcome packets to Preston residents. This grant also provided funds to purchase equipment for the association’s ongoing water quality monitoring program and assisted in a free-soil testing day for all Preston residents.
